A Journey of a Thousand Miles

It’s fairly strange writing an entrepreneurial blog post the day after I drop a huge bombshell on the world.  But life goes on and this homework assignment is due tomorrow.

Woody Allen said, “90% of life is just showing up.”  It makes it sound so easy doesn’t it?  Just be where you need to be, and 90% of life will just take care of itself.  Except that’s not really what it means, is it?

Let’s talk about what it means to “show up”.  This week, I’ve been a little out of sorts.  I’ve been running hither and thither, putting out fires all over the place, and keeping crazy busy.

Actually, that’s a lie.  It’s a total and complete lie.  I’ve been waking up at 3 am, unable to sleep.  I haven’t eaten much, and my concentration is shot.  I wander around my house like a zombie and usually end up taking at least one nap… or at least trying to.  My house is a disaster, my kids are wild, and I don’t see any of it.

I’m not showing up.  I’m here, but I’m checked out.

Understandable?  Yes.  Justifiable?  Maybe.  Healthy?  Nope.

But today was better.  In the book Hero’s Journey: Inspirational Classics and Practical Advice from a Serial Entrepreneur and an Entrepreneurial Priest one of the authors says, “We all feel an urge to excel, to reach beyond our confinements and transcend ourselves.  But we are also plagued by inertia.  This inertia is the first and biggest obstacle to success.”

Life is not easy.  It freaking sucks sometimes.  But that is no excuse to just give up.  Elder Bednar says, “you and I are agents, and we primarily are to act and not just be acted upon”

Sometimes it’s really hard to keep going.  Sometimes it’s really hard to do the right thing.  But I am not a passive animal, that is tossed about by the elements.  I can take control.  I can take a stand.  I can make my own decisions and not wait for others to make them for me.

It’s not going to be easy.  There are going to be ups and downs, I’m going to have to take breaks.  I can’t go full speed ahead.  Life goes on, and so must I.  Time to clock back into my life.
