The Wedding Letters – Review

I have read many books that have made me cry because I feel their sadness and heartbreak.  I think this is the first time I have ever read a book that made me cry because I was so happy.
The Wedding Letters is the story of Noah Cooper and his lady love, Rachel.  As their wedding approaches, Noah’s family keeps alive a tradition of gathering letters of advice and encouragement to present to the couple on their wedding day.  But a monkey wrench is thrown into the plans when Rachel’s already checkered family life turns out to be worse than anyone had feared.
What was my take on it?   Jason Wright is brilliant.  The Wedding Letters nearly is 300 pages of delightful storyline and good natured fun!  I am amazed at how much of a plot he was able to cram into so few pages.  There is so much in there but it didn’t feel rushed or forced at all.  I had plenty of time to fall in love with the characters, decide who’s side I was on, and I still managed to read the entire book in two days (without totally neglecting my family I might add).
Another quality I loved about The Wedding Letters is how real it was.  Unlike many books these days, the hardships that Noah, Rachel and their families go through are genuine.  There were no unrealistic hero’s or heroines and no mustachioed villains.  Just ordinary, good, God fearing folk, real families with real problems, real yet unexpected humor, real honest conversation, real life trials, real hardships, and real life heartache.
I have a confession though… I didn’t realize that it was a sequel.  I hadn’t read The Wednesday Letters so when I would come to a few references to Noah’s parent’s lives, I would think “Now I’d like to know a little more about THAT story too!”  Once I figured it out, I ordered The Wednesday Letters right away (and was really annoyed when it wasn’t delivered on the day the tracking number said it would be).  But I honestly don’t think that my reading them out of order took anything away from my experience.  The Wednesday Letters and The Wedding Letters are stories unto themselves.  And while my opinion is that you don’t have to read one in order to read the other, I would highly suggest that you read them both, whatever the order.  If you don’t, you are missing out on some truly wonderful stories, life lessons and inspiration.
{Disclaimer: I received this book for my family for free.  I received no other compensation for this review and all opinions are my own.}
