I’ve Changed My Mind

So, remember my last post?  How I couldn’t decide between American History and Ancient History?  Then decided on American.

Well I’ve changed my mind.  The Home Educator’s prerogative.  Matt mentioned to me that he had taken a class in college and while he didn’t enjoy the class or the instructor, that there was one thing he did like.

Apparently the answers to essays and tests that were given were expected to follow a certain format.  Basically if you were asked about one thing, you had to tell all you could about the subject, then expand on the impact that subject had on it’s town, city, country and then the world.  You see where I am going with this?  No?

Matt told me “American History is PART of World History, so you should just treat it as a part of the whole.”  You know what?  He’s right!

As an American, American History is very important to me and my family, however it is part of a whole.   And a comparatively small and recent part at that.

If I jump right into the American Revolution without also being able to teach what is going on in the rest of the world a the same time, my children won’t be able to see the big picture and I’m short changing them.  I imagine this will especially come in handy when discussing the World Wars and basically any other encounter we have had with another country.  World War II didn’t start when the United States entered it.

History is a STORY.  It’s right there, in the word.  And if I were to tell my kids a story, where would I start?  At the beginning.  So that is what I’ll do.
