Success!

I want to be able to do a triathlon, and in order to do that, I need to be able to swim.  Don’t get me wrong, if I were thrown into the ocean I could keep my head above water and move around a bit, but I would die of exhaustion before I made it to shore.

So a few weeks ago, Matt took me to the pool and tried to teach me me the finer points on swimming something other than a dog paddle.

It was a mess.  My freestyle is something akin to a baby’s flailing limbs.
He kept telling me not to worry, that it would be a while before I got it and even longer before I got any kind of speed.
Yesterday I was able to get to the pool for the first time since that disastrous first attempt.
I did two laps a flailing baby limbs, needing to stop and rest at least once each time I swam one length (not down and back, just down.)
For my third lap, I did a sloppy breast stroke, because at least then I didn’t have to worry about my breathing.
I decided that I’d try freestyle again for my fourth lap and then call it quits for the day.  About halfway down the first length it clicked!  My body finally started to do what my brain was telling it!  And for the first time in my life, I was able to swim the length of the pool without stopping for a breather.
So I did two more laps, and not once did I have to stop and take a break mid lap.  AMAZING!
I’m slow, it’s not pretty, my legs don’t stay high enough and it takes every ounce of concentration that I have, but I can DO it!!
Sprint-tri, here I come!!

You will love doing a tri! I hope it works out for you! I am supposed to be doing one in September, but vacations and illnesses have pretty much guaranteed that if I do it I'll be crawling across the finish line. But I could deal with that. :)
