Since I started homeschooling four years ago one of my favorite resources has been The Old Schoolhouse Magazine.  Their tips, stories, curriculum, and reviews have been invaluable for a newbie (yes, after four years I still consider myself a newbie… just like parenting my homeschooling techniques are always evolving).

I recently had the opportunity to take a close look at SchoolHouseTeachers.com which is an online curriculum resource arm of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine.

SchoolHouseTeachers.com provides the subscriber with new material every month to use in school, written by more than 25 experts!  The subjects cover elementary through high school and everything from the three R’s (complete with math video lectures) to history, geography, astronomy and even film making!  In addition to the great curriculum they have articles for helping teach kids with special needs, back issues of The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, planners, free ebooks, and more.  There seems to be something for every family, but it’s more likely that there are many somethings :)

I played around mostly with the Pre-K/Elementary section of the site because, well, that is where my kids are.  The first subject I went to was… wait for it… HISTORY!  Big surprise, right?  It was perfect for my kiddos. Paper dolls, coloring pages, hands-on activities (I think my kids are addicted to cut and paste projects).

Now as much as I would LOVE to come up with this kind of thing on my own, it’s just not realistic.  I love being able to take advantage of other people’s creativity and hard work!  It especially comes in handy on days when I’m pregnant, or recovering from being pregnant, or busy, or sick, or for any other reason it is not a Mary Poppins Day.  For $5.95 a month (first month just $1) it is well worth it!

I especially love the fact that I am not cluttering up my valuable bookcase space!  I only have to print out the pages that I will USE.

But back to SchoolHouseTeachers.com.  The thing that I am MOST excited about is how it will help my further my OWN education.  I know some of you may think that it’s silly for me to basically “go back to school” but you can’t expect a homeschooling mother not to LOVE learning!  Just because I’ve already graduated from high school doesn’t mean that I have gleaned everything possible from the subjects that were offered (not to mention the 13 years that stand between me and my high school years).  I can’t wait to snuggle up with the economics lessons (feel free to tell me what a nerd I am in the comments).

I wasn’t in love with the layout of the site.  The style isn’t as straight forward as I am accustomed to.  The first thing I wanted to find when I went to SchoolHouseTeachers.com was an index of sorts.  I did eventually find it under the Teacher Lesson Archives, but it took some digging to get to it.  That being said, it’s just a matter of personal preference.  The content more than makes up for it :)

I never knew this resource was available, definitely checking it out, certainly can’t beat the price! I discovered the first week of homeschooling my 5 year old, that my public school education left me with a lot of gaps. He’s learning about things (primarily historical) that I never learned through all my schooling including college. It’s one of the things I love most about homeschooling- getting to learn right along with them!
