Floor Cushions

Last October I had the “brilliant” idea of having a 100% hand-made Christmas in our home.  Take a VERY pregnant homeschooling mom and add in a hurricane, no power for two weeks, a newborn, and a husband who has to spend every free moment studying for a test that will make or break his career and you get… well you do NOT get a 100% hand-made Christmas.

One thing I DID manage to make for my children were floor cushions.  I found the pattern and tutorial at Living with Punks.  As a seamstress I consider myself just a hair above a “beginner” and I found them easy enough to make though fairly time consuming (to be fair, I had to make FOUR of them, I imagine just one would take no time at all).  I used the measurements for the larger floor cushion and made the piping myself (with her tutorial to help).  I also painted their initials on them so that come Christmas morning they would know which one belonged to whom.

My kids LOVE LOVE LOVE them!  They use them to lay/sit on while watching TV or doing school work.  Matt used one as a pillow for his Christmas Day nap.  I’ve even been known to plop on one while sorting clothes or playing on the floor with Jack.  Even Henry loves to lay on them while napping.  This is exactly how I intended for my kids to use them.

I did NOT intend for them to use them as sumo suits, bashing machines, or as a large cushion tower to jump into; regardless, they seem to be holding up well under the abuse.

Head on over to Living with Punks and make your own!  Your kids will love them :)

Those look great and glad the kids are enjoying them too even if they’re not always used as cushions ;)
