The Bible – Giveaway

The book is always better than the movie, right?  Matt says that the Swiss Family Robinson movie is better than the book but in most cases a movie just can’t hold a candle to the meaning and entertainment of the book.

Sometime though, you just need to SEE it.  I didn’t fully understand MacBeth until I SAW it.  The antiquated language of Shakespeare is such that it’s difficult to understand if you don’t see it in context.

I love the King James Version of The Bible.  It’s beautiful and in my opinion the modern translations cannot hold a candle to it’s poetry.  That does not necessarily mean that it is easy to understand.

A few years ago The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints launched biblevideos.org.  On this site are dozens of videos that depict events in the life of Christ.  Each video is under ten minus (the average being around 4 minutes long).  Watching the Bible videos is one of my favorite things to do.  The stories are so inspiring and up lifting.  My only complaint is that it is currently limited to The New Testament.

When I heard that The History Channel was launching it’s own Bible series had mixed feelings.  Hollywood can really mess things up sometimes.  The last thing I wanted was for someone to tarnish the sacred word of God and call it “history”.  Once I found out who was behind it I started to warm up to the idea.  Then after several trusted people assured me that it was wasn’t what I worried it would become I can officially say that I am excited about it!

Roma Downey (Touched by an Angel) and her husband Mark Burnett (the guy behind Survivor and The Amazing Race) are the brains behind this operation.  They and the rest of their team spent months in the Moroccan desert shooting the series.  A 10 hour series, 5 hours are devoted to each the Old and the New Testament.

Just look at these movie stills:

With all due respect to Charlton Heston, it looks as though the 10 Commandments have nothing on this

Just beautiful.  Epic is the only word that comes to mind.  If it is as good as I hope it is than 10 hours won’t be nearly enough!

Anyone who has read The Bible (especially the Old Testament) knows that it is filled with war, abuse, seduction, secret conspiracies, drunken men, prostitutes, evil kings, and slaughter.  If that were all it were than it certainly wouldn’t warrant the respect and devotion it does.

The Bible also contains miracles, hope, joy and above all else, love.  As Mark Burnett so eloquently put it “It’s actually a love story, of God’s love for us.”

The Bible premieres on the History Channel this Sunday (March 3rd) at 8pm Eastern time.

In the meantime here is the countdown app. You can quiz yourself on your Bible knowledge (I expected to do better than I did! I guess I need to brush up on my Old Testament trivia :))  Leave a comment telling me your favorite bible story and you could win a copy of one of the official The Bible Companion Books!**
